We can all use a little extra money. Maybe you have a vacation coming up or some unexpected expenses. Maybe you’ve had your eye on something special for yourself or a loved one. Maybe you want to jumpstart working for yourself.

There are a lot of ways to make more money. But what if you’re in a rush? Thankfully, there are a lot of great ways to make more money right now. Whether you want to have a few extra hours in a day, a few minutes, or you want to make money doing things you already do, there’s something for everyone.

Different Ways

There are so many ways to go about making more money. You can make more money doing what you’re already doing, you can do more of what you are doing, both, start a side hustle, sell things, rent things, and more. The choice is yours.

Make more money at your job

1. Make money by asking for a raise

It can be difficult to work for someone else, especially if you aren’t getting paid what you think you deserve. Asking for a raise can be even more difficult but If you are working for somebody else and want to make more money right now, it’s hard to do better.

Not only will you be making more money right away but asking for a raise can be a great starting point to upward progress in your career.

How exactly does one go about asking for a raise? Before jumping up from your chair and marching into your boss’s office to demand more money, try to put yourself in their shoes and think about this from their perspective.

Why should they pay you more? If you can confidently answer that question, you’re in good shape. If not, take a moment to think about what you bring to the table and how your contributions are positively impacting your department and the company you work for

Always remember to be respectful, earnest, and make sure that you are approaching the situation from a perspective of mutual benefit. That means a win for them, a win for you, and potentially a win for your wallet.

2. Make money working overtime

Regardless of how much you make, if you are eligible for overtime pay, making more money is just a little extra work away.

Working overtime works in your favor in a number of ways. First off, you are showing that you are willing to put in the work required to get things done. Second, depending on your job, these extra hours can help you get ahead on whatever tasks, projects, or extras that you have on your to-do list.

If you are a part time employee, working more will earn you more money while still maintaining a flexible schedule, depending on your current schedule. As a full time equivalent employee, overtime can earn you time and a half under the FLSA which can really add up.

Even just an extra hour a week can turn into a nice increase come payday. Couple that with a few tricks to save money and you’ll be well on your way to a healthier bank account.

3. Make money selling things you don’t use

Take a look around. If you are at home, there’s probably a good chance that you are looking at something that you haven’t used in a while. If you took some time and ventured into your closet, or some of the less visited areas of your living quarters, there’s probably a good chance that you’ll find items that you haven’t used in years.

Perhaps some of these items are actually pretty nice or unique. If that’s the case there are probably other people willing to pay you money for them.

Apps have really streamlined the process of selling unwanted or unused items, eliminating the need to prepare and advertise for a garage sale. Of course, if that appeals to you, by all means go for it! But if a more passive approach to selling your stuff is what you’re looking for, there are apps like OfferUp, Meta Marketplace (formerly known as Facebook Marketplace), Poshmark, and, of course, Ebay to help you get rid of stuff quickly and securely.

4. Make money selling your unwanted electronics

If you have a box full of old electronics including old phones, computers, or even less conventional electronics, you basically have a box of money. This can make looking through your closet or garage for old cell phones a lot like looking for change in your sofa, but better. Think of it like a treasure hunt.

Amazon has a program called Amazon Trade-In that will buy these used electronics, compensating you based on their appraised condition. They will, however, be paying you with an Amazon.com gift card but since they sell just about anything and everything this may not be a bad thing.

If you want cash for your items, don’t worry, there are many places that will pay you regular money for your items. Decluttr is one such place, offering fast payment and free shipping.

Another company offering to purchase used electronics is BuyBackWorld, which also offers free shipping and will pay you within two days of your item passing inspection.

5. Make money renting things you don’t use

Selling unused items around the house may seem obvious but you probably never considered renting your items as an option.

Sure, at first it may seem like an unlikely way to make money but when you really stop and think about it, we rent things all the time. How many of these are things that you could rent to other people?

The possibilities are surprising and include everything from your house, rooms in your house, space in your house as storage, parking, RVs, cars, boats, bikes, clothes, baby gear, electronics, etc. Yes, if you own it, you can probably rent it.

To get you started I’ve created a list below of what you can rent and where you can rent it but there are many more options than this:

  • Airbnb – rent your room or house
  • Neighbor – rent space for storage or parking
  • Spacer – rent your driveway
  • Outdoorsy – rent your RV
  • HyreCar – rent your car
  • Boatsetter – rent your boat
  • Spinlister – rent your bike, snowboard, and other sporting gear
  • Tulerie – rent your clothes
  • BabyQuip – rent your baby gear
  • Fat Llama – rent your electronics and (almost) everything else

6. Make money shopping

Make money shopping? Yes, this is a real thing and you can make money shopping for things you already buy, like groceries.

Making money back on purchases is win-win because it is essentially making the things you buy cheaper. It also makes you a smart shopper and a little less affected by inflation. So how exactly does one earn cash back on purchases?

Rakuten and Ibotta are two apps that partner with thousands of retailers to help you earn cash back on purchases that you make everyday. Whether you are buying groceries, clothing, or electronics, these apps will help you get cash back on purchases you are already making.

7. Make money advertising on your car

Perhaps you’ve heard about people getting paid to have tattoos of companies placed on them as advertisements. Don’t worry, that’s not what I’m talking about here. What I am talking about is having your car vinyl wrapped with a company’s advertisement.

Admittedly, this won’t be for everyone but if you are willing, this can be a very easy way to make a decent amount of money for just driving around like you normally would.

Carvertise and Wrapify are two companies that will pay you to advertise on your car. Earnings can be hundreds of dollars a month and depend on miles driven and the amount of coverage on your car.

8. Make money performing tasks

Do you find yourself marveling at how easy it is for you to assemble Ikea furniture? Do you love running errands? Do you enjoy moving or cleaning things? If you are handy and have some spare time, you can make extra money performing tasks for other people.

TaskRabbit connects people looking for help with a multitude of tasks with people who can perform those tasks for them. As a “Tasker,” you get to work when you want, doing what you want, while helping people and getting paid.

9. Make money delivering for Amazon

Delivering packages isn’t just for the professional driver anymore. Amazon Flex offers a way for you to use your own vehicle to deliver packages and make extra money when you are available to work.

According to Amazon, Amazon Flex drivers earn between $18 – $25 an hour, depending on location, season, and many other factors. If you are looking for a way to make extra money part time, this can be a great way to do just that.

10. Make money shopping for people

Shopping and delivering for others, much like delivering packages for Amazon, offers flexibility to work around a more rigid work schedule, or to accommodate other obligations you might have.

Many people are willing to pay for the convenience of not having to go out and shop for everything from groceries to clothing, and many companies have stepped up to offer that service.

Instacart, Shipt, and Favor are just a few examples of companies that will pay you to shop and deliver all sorts of products to people through their apps.

11. Make money as an Uber or Lyft driver

Ridesharing apps have been around since Uber first launched in 2009 and have grown to include many competitors, the most notable being Lyft.

If you enjoy driving and, more specifically, driving around other people, becoming a driver for one of these two companies can be a fantastic way to make some good side money, especially if you live in a larger city.

This is another great way to have flexible hours and make decent money on the side. Some people even drive for Uber or Lyft (or both) as their primary source of income. Either way, driving in your spare time can make you money right away and can be an excellent way to earn extra income.

12. Make money tutoring

Do you like teaching? Are you an expert in a subject? Tutoring may be an excellent way for you to make more money.

Tutur.com offers a way to connect qualified tutors with students ranging from kindergarten through college for no cost, 1-1 online tutoring.

Studypool is another online platform where, as a tutor, you can browse live questions and bid on questions that you are interested in answering.

13. Make money freelancing

If tutoring isn’t your thing or you have other talents that you feel are marketable, there are some great platforms that help freelancers connect with clients for short and long term working relationships. Two of the leading names in this space are Fiverr and Upwork.

Fiverr works by connecting buyers and sellers of services in a global marketplace. Despite the name, prices charged for services can vary wildly and are definitely not restricted to a five dollar limit. In fact, depending on the service, prices can be in the five figure range.

Upwork is similar to Fiverr in that it connects freelancers with clients looking for services. However, Upwork allows you to reach out to potential clients looking for work, allowing you to be more proactive.

The difference is in the details and that means researching which will work for your particular goals and preferred approach. Either way, both are solid options for making more money through freelancing.

14. Make money as a virtual assistant

Working from home has huge appeal for a lot of people. No commute, no cubicle unless you set one up at home (why?), and the company of your favorite furry friend. What’s even better than this? Working from home for yourself.

Sure, there are obstacles to working for yourself. You have to be self motivated, organized, and disciplined, but for most people all of this is going to be worth it.

Offering your services as a virtual assistant could be an excellent way to start working from home, either in your free time or even full time, performing administrative work for other entrepreneurs and businesses.

The scope of work depends on your expertise but can include data entry, bookkeeping, social media management, and research, to name a few.

Where do you go to become a virtual assistant? Zirtual, Boldly, and Time Etc are good places to start.

15. Making money taking surveys

Do you like surveys? Maybe, sort of? What about getting paid to take them? With Survey Junkie, you can get paid to take surveys and even participate in focus groups.

How does it work? As you participate in surveys, you earn virtual points which are redeemable via PayPal or e-Giftcards. How much can you make on Survey Junkie? Each point is worth one cent with a $5 minimum amount, or 500 points, before payout. The amount earned depends on the number and types of surveys taken but can range from around $0.50 to a few dollars per survey.

While this may not seem like much, this is a very easy way to make a few extra bucks here and there in your free time. Turn that 30 minutes you would’ve spent watching cat videos into some extra cash. The best part is it’s free to sign up and get started making extra money.

Make the most of the money you have

16. Start a budget

Make the most of your money with a budget! Do you know how much you spend each week? Each month? Do you know how much you make? Answering these simple questions are the key to freeing up extra dollars that you already have.

Even if you already have a budget, regular housekeeping is a good practice to keep on top of everything and is a great way to reinvigorate your money making endeavors. If you think about it, spending less money is like making more money but without the extra work.

Don’t know where to start? Our article, How to Create a Budget, covers all the basics to get you started right away. It’s easier than you think and the benefits are huge.
