Mint Mobile: Could it Save You Hundreds?

Do you or someone you know have a cell phone? Are you reading this on a cell phone? If not, is it because you have expensive data?

The point here is everyone has a cell phone. This means that everyone is paying cell phone bills and if my own experience means anything, everyone is probably paying too much.

If we’re spending money on something that we have to have, why not spend less?

How much are you spending on your cell phone bill right now? I know when I was looking around it was easy to spend over $100 a month and I’ve heard of people spending double that. No thank you.

Are we doomed to paying three figures every month and if not, what options are there? When you think of cell phone providers some big names probably come to mind but they are not the only options. Mint Mobile, for example, offers the same services as these big names for much, much, less.

Who is Mint Mobile and why so cheap?

Mint Mobile has been around since 2016, coming up with creative ways to lower the cost of their plans. How low exactly? Their lowest plan, which offers unlimited talk and text, is just $15 a month and 4GB of 5G or 4G LTE, whichever is stronger. So basically, for the cost of a couple fancy coffees you’re covered.

They also offer a host of other plans with many customization options to make sure you have exactly what you need for a whole lot less than what you’re paying now.

I’m sure you’re asking how on earth can their plans be that cheap? Mint Mobile utilizes the concept of bulk buying, so that the more you purchase up front, the more you save. Their three month plan offers their cheapest monthly price of $15. This lets you get a feel for how much data you use and if Mint Mobile is right for you. If you want to upgrade for more available data, you can pay upfront for a one time purchase of more data, or upgrade within their app to a different plan. Simple and easy.

On the more “expensive” end of things is their unlimited plan, coming in at $30 a month. With this you get unlimited data but reduced speeds after 35GB. Maybe I’m not using my phone enough but I’m averaging around 7GB data and I usually have my wifi turned off, so the majority of my data usage is represented in that 7GB. I would guess that I represent a comfortable average as far as data usage is concerned.

What plans do they have?

The personalization of their plans is one of the things that I think is so great about Mint Mobile. You can choose exactly what you need, nothing less, and nothing more, for yourself or your family.

  • $15 a month for 4GB a month
  • $20 a month for 10GB a month
  • $25 a month for 15GB a month
  • $30 a month for Unlimited data

All of their plans also offer unlimited talk and text, wifi calling and text, free international calls to Mexico and Canada and free hotspot capability.

There is even a 7 day, money back guarantee for all purchases made on mintmobile.com or in their app.

Can I use the phone I already have?

Mint Mobile lets you bring your own. You just need to make sure that it is compatible and unlocked. Check out if your phone is compatible here: Bring Your Own Phone Plans | BYOP SIM Card | Mint Mobile

You can also choose to purchase a phone from them. From Apple iPhones to Google Pixels, you can find what you need. They also offer payments with Affirm.

Is it worth it?

Like I said in the beginning of this post, if you have to pay for something anyway, why not pay less?

Mint Mobile is a great option for saving money each month and should definitely be considered if you are looking for ways to save, especially with their 7 day money back guarantee.

If you save $50 a month switching over to Mint Mobile, for example, that would be $600 a year saved. I’m willing to bet that most of you reading could save that much if not more. Depending on how much you are paying currently, it’s possible to save well over a thousand dollars. That’s a lot of money that could go toward paying off debt, saving for retirement, or even a much deserved family vacation, all for something that you already pay for every month.

Take a look at Mint Mobile’s site to see how coverage is in your area. They also have a really useful savings calculator.

How much are you paying for your cell phone plan? What would you do with your savings?
